The end (of the year) is here

How time flies. In a couple of weeks we’ll be in the second last month of the year. And I guess it should be time to look back at what I’ve done and lay down plans for the upcoming year. Then again, why do people need to do these sorts of things at the end/beginning of the year. It’s such an arbitrary date – I feel that anything can be done anytime, it’s just a matter of doing it when you want to/can. People use future dates (I’ll start next week!) because they are procrastinators. I am a shining example of such a person. I won’t go into details, but yeah – I aim to eliminate procrastination from my life. Fingers crossed.

Anyhow, as some of you know, I’m into gaming. I’m a huge nerd about it. Sure, I don’t own the latest consoles or play all the latest games, but I do keep myself in the know by listening to gaming podcasts and I do play and watch one of the most popular games in the world – Dota 2. I also have a huge Steam library, no thanks to all the bundles and Steam sales I’ve given in to, so that means I have a huge backlog of games to play. I’ve been slowly clearing them one by one (currently playing L.A. Noire and Hotline Miami 2) – so yeah, I play a lot of games.

One aspect about gaming I’m into as well is game development. One of my ideal/dream jobs is to be a game developer (and to live comfortably off my earnings lel) but I have no experience in the field. I’ve learnt basic programming in school and in college, but I have a long way to go before I can call myself competent at it. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about it for a while now and I’ve decided to take my first step towards my dream (being a rock star is out of the question, and music will remain a hobby haha).

This weekend, I spent about half a day drafting the story of my first game which I intend to work on over the next few months. I haven’t set any timelines yet because I have a few things to accomplish beforehand. Firstly, I need to dip my toes into game making. Earlier this year, I tried my hand at Game Maker Studio and did a few tutorials (enough to create my own version of Breakout) but I realized that I had a long way to go before I could accomplish anything worthy enough to be called a proper game. That shit was HARD. So I’ve decided to take a step back and create a game with a simpler engine – RPG Maker. Yes, some people are going to flame me for it but whatever. Baby steps.

Since I have no idea how to create games using RPG Maker, I’ll be learning the software at the same time while I create my game. I’ve already dug up a bunch of tutorials to begin, and I’m super pumped about it. I won’t be revealing any details about my game for now since I don’t have anything confirmed but if you have any tips/advice for an aspiring game maker, feel free to drop me a message or two!
