Panic At The Disco, one of those bands that I fell out of love with after their earlier material and now have grown to love again. It was a magical beginning when I first heard about the band. They were being described as Fall Out Boy with synths. I didn’t know what to expect, torrented their debut ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ and was blown away. I kept that CD spinning in my car for months!
Panic! At The Disco – Time To Dance
It was the first time I had ever been exposed to such catchy music with clever lyrics and phrasings lifted from books and movies (I didn’t know people were allowed to do such things back then!). Brendon Urie’s vocals were great – he did sound very much like Patrick Stump, but as the band grew, so did his vocal style.
Anyway after the amazing debut, their follow-up, Pretty Odd felt very strange to me. It was a completely new style, which back then I didn’t really appreciate (I wasn’t a fan of versatility then). And while I still listened to it and sang along to the album, I wasn’t in love with it like I was with the first one. Vices & Virtues came out and I think I only listened to it less than five times before giving up on them.
Fast forward to late 2016 when they released a music video for LA Devotee which I enjoyed and piqued my interest in the band again. I listened to the whole album and decided to check out the other albums I missed in the past (which included relistening to Vices & Virtues). I don’t know if it’s a sign of me being older, more tolerant to various genres of music, or just a case of not being fair in the first place, I found myself in love with the band again. Sure, they weren’t the same band as when they burst onto the scene back in 2005 (literally as well – Panic! At The Disco is now officially just Brendon Urie with standins for live shows) but they still churned out good music – I just didn’t know how to appreciate it.
