He’s not quite as charming as he may seem, come and claim your queen!

I’ve been listening to Alesana ever since an ex-colleague introduced them to me back in 2007, and recently I’ve been spinning their newer stuff on my playlist. One thing that amazes me is that despite a few lineup changes, they’ve stuck to and continue to play music in the same vein as their original stuff. They’re probably the epitome of ‘don’t fix it if it isn’t broken’ in the post-hardcore scene.

Alesana – Apology

The very first Alesana song I got to listen to was Apology. I was thrown off guard by the song’s piano intro and melodic vocals which suddenly transitioned to a super heavy, ass-kicking screamalong song. When it was over, I had to listen to it again. Then I checked out the rest of their album. This Conversation Is Over quickly became one of my ‘listen on repeat’ songs. I couldn’t get enough of the band and devoured their albums with each new release. They were one of the bands who did the whole sing-scream thing in the early 2000s right.

Alesana – This Conversation Is Over

Most of their lyrics are pretty abstract and tell some sort of story – this is one band whose lyrics I don’t pay that much attention to. But they do have catchy choruses that you can sing (or scream) along to.

Alesana – Welcome To The Vanity Fair

As evident in their follow-up albums, which were slightly poppier but still in similar vein, these guys had the formula down. It worked, they played it well, and fans like me remained happy. Too bad the sound system in the hall they played at was so shit when they came to KL. I totally understand if they never return to this country.

Alesana – The Artist

Alesana’s music isn’t for everybody, and their whole goth/vampire get-up will probably turn a lot of people off. But if you’re interested in melodic vocals intertwined with brutal screams and fancy guitar work, give them a shot if you haven’t already. You might find them enjoyable. Here are some of my favorite songs from them.

Alesana – Seduction

Alesana – Red And Dying Evening

Alesana – The Murderer

Alesana – Deja Vu All Over Again

Alesana – Comedy Of Errors

Alesana – Better Luck Next Time, Prince Charming

Alesana – This Is Usually The Part Where People Scream

Alesana – Tilting The Hour Glass
