You should listen to this song before you read this post:

Ray Peterson – Tell Laura I Love Her

In today’s installment of ‘Songs you didn’t know were sad’, we have the famous song from the 60s – Tell Laura I Love Her. If any of you were like me and never paid attention to the song when you first heard it, you probably brushed it off as just another a cheesy love song. I can’t remember when it was when I paid attention to the words Ray Peterson was singing but when I did I realized how sad and depressing it was.

From Wikipedia: “Tell Laura I Love Her” is the tragic story of a teenage boy named Tommy who is desperately in love with a girl named Laura. Although they are only teenagers, he wants to marry her, so he enters a stock car race, hoping to win, and use the prize money to buy Laura a wedding ring. The second verse tells the mysterious story of how the boy’s car overturned and burst into flames—though no-one knows why—and the boy was killed, his last words being “Tell Laura I love her… My love for her will never die.” In the final verse, Laura prays inside the chapel, where she can still hear Tommy’s voice intoning the title one more time, before it fades out.

Anyway, here’s the song with the lyrics for you to read/sing along:

Tragic, huh? I guess Ray Peterson was singing emo songs before it was cool.
